As you can see, Harley carburetor jetting is a fairly simple procedure that under most conditions will yield greater performance when requiring a richer fuel mixture. Enjoy the Ride! Main jet replacement should be reserved until after the slow idle jet is replaced and mixture is tuned unless a lean condition is apparent during full throttle.
Harley carburetor jetting can be accomplished with minimal mechanical knowledge. Tools to perform this task include just a simple set of screwdrivers. Remove the 4 screws securing the bowl to the base of the carburetor and remove the bowl. The jet size is stamped into the top of the jet i.
Be careful not to strip the head of the jet. Pilot Jet location. With a flat head screwdriver unscrew the Main Jet from the brass needle jet holder aka Emulsion Tube. Note the jet size stamped into the top of the jet i. There is no need to remove the emulsion tube unless required for cleaning. Replace the Pilot Jet with one size larger.
This of course assumes that you are starting out with the stock jet size.
If your stock jet was a 42 the next size larger will be 44 or Only increase the jet sizing one size at a time to avoid an overly rich idle. Main Jets are sized incrementally by 5, so if your stock jet was a the next size larger will be Avoid installing jets that are too rich as this will create a sluggish feeling at full throttle as well as contribute to plug fouling.
Many Twin Cam models except California are already appropriately jetted with a main jet that will allow for a good starting point for tuning. As mentioned, proper mixture adjustment is key to proper jetting and should be performed first.

An exhaust system is made for every bike, engine, style, and configuration imaginable. If you are contemplating the purchase of a new Harley exhaust system you should first ask yourself a few questions.
How important is performance compared to looks? Are you looking for performance in low to midrange or high end torque? For anyone interested in what will improve performance or why those drag pipes made your ride a slug please read on. Without getting into a lesson in physics there are three factors that effect the performance and tuning of an exhaust system.
Sonic pulse, thermal pulse, and exhaust gas velocity. Sonic pulse. Think of this as a shock wave. This pulse travels through the exhaust and at the end of the pipe actually turns around and heads back toward the exhaust valve. Torque cones can sometimes reduce this condition. Thermal pulse. Similar to sonic pulse, this is a wave created by the hot gas exiting the exhaust valve.
The thermal pulse also reverses direction at the end of the pipe but unfortunately travels at a different rate, thus reaching the combustion chamber at a different time. Exhaust gas velocity.Harley Davidson Breakout Friends Meeting in Austria/Gaschurn 22-24.07.16
This is the rate at which gas travels through the exhaust system. The optimal velocity is feet per minute. Bigger is not always better and a larger pipe will actually slow this velocity thus restricting flow.
So what does all of this mean? TIP: Be sure to replace your exhaust port gaskets any time you change or reinstall pipes. Drag pipes are tuned for higher rpm large displacement engines where these pulses can be overcome. Some drag pipe makers such as Cycle Shack offer special baffles to help tune their drag pipes.
There are also the longer Drag Pipes which have the look of straight drags but the baffles and extra length help compensate for reversion by providing just the right amount of back pressure. One trick is to install anti-reversion or torque cones. When installed inside the head pipes these cones act to repel the pulse waves as they return to the engine and alter velocity as the gas passes through the narrower passage.Often, these striking mufflers are part of a Harley aftermarket exhaust upgrade, or an exhaust upgrade for another popular line of motorcycles.
